A revival of a dramatic masterpiece opera set against the backdrop of Brazilian history! World-premiere video recording Antônio Carlos Gomes was a 19th-century composer born in Brazil who studied in Italy and gained fame after staging several of his own operas at La Scala before returning to Brazil, where he is hailed as the founder of the Brazilian National School of Music. This opera, *O Escravo* (The Slave), set against the backdrop of slavery, premiered in Brazil in 1889. At a time when the abolition of slavery was a major political issue in Brazil, the work faced numerous obstacles—including the necessity of changing its historical setting—before it was finally completed. Although the premiere was a huge success in Brazil, the work subsequently sank into obscurity as time passed. This video features a revival of the work by the Cagliari Opera House, which is actively committed to rediscovering and staging hidden masterpieces. The drama unfolds against the backdrop of the conflict between the indigenous people (slaves) and their Portuguese rulers, interwoven with a tale of love and hatred between a man and a woman, all set to dramatic and beautiful melodies that at times evoke Verdi. Combined with a beautiful set symbolizing the Brazilian landscape and the free-spirited singing of outstanding young vocalists, the baton of Brazilian-born maestro John Neshling masterfully brings together the richly colorful and dramatic music of Gomes.
