[Bach Performed by a Star-Studded Lineup: Petri, Perl, and Esfahani!] Bach’s Flute Sonatas performed by Mikala Petri. This is her first re-recording since her 1992 album with Keith Jarrett. Joining her this time are Mahan Esfahani, a harpsichordist making waves as part of the new generation, and Hille Pearl, a viola da gamba player who is in high demand for concerts and recordings worldwide and now exudes the very air of a queen. With this trio of musicians—each with their own distinct styles—there are moments when a sudden sense of tension runs through the intimate ensemble, creating a deeply satisfying effect. Whereas the previous recording used soprano and alto recorders, this one employs alto and tenor recorders for a richer expression, achieving an exquisite balance with the viola da gamba. The recording, which captures the wonderful acoustics of a Copenhagen church, is truly beautiful. Although these six sonatas—written primarily during the latter part of Bach’s life—were not originally intended to form a cohesive collection, the album achieves a sense of unity throughout, likely due to the ingenious choice of instruments and the effective use of transposition.
