Amid a flurry of releases befitting this commemorative year, this latest recording from the globally renowned, up-and-coming French label Alpha is far more than just a collection of rare repertoire. With an impeccable choice of performers and a program so meticulously curated it leaves one in awe, this is a rich and substantial album that challenges the conventional perception of Offenbach. As exemplified by the success of *Orpheus in the Underworld (In Heaven and Hell)* in 1858, French composer Offenbach’s masterful comic operas were written most frequently during the Second Empire—that is, in the 1850s and 1860s. However, this German-born composer, like Chopin and Donizetti, had already arrived in Paris as early as the 1830s. This album features his ambitious early work *Six Fables* (with soloist Karine Déhé, who has made remarkable strides in recent years!), as well as dance pieces that provided the young Offenbach with his daily bread. Including a number of rare overtures, this is an excellent program that traces the arc of his career. Enjoy this spirited performance—with an eye toward period-authentic interpretation—alongside the orchestra of the Rouen Opera (located north of Paris in Normandy), which has been garnering increasing attention in recent years for its innovative initiatives.
