While talented young artists such as Raphaël Pichon and Jean Rondeau have been making their mark on the world stage in recent years, the Palace of Versailles label has now decided to release the debut recording by conductor Valentin Tourne, born in 1996. It’s safe to say this is a bold release, made with the conviction that his music will contribute to the reputation of both the label and the Palace. This is because Tourne has already been making waves throughout the French early music scene over the past few years. At the age of five, he was deeply moved by the film *A Morning of Encounters*, which opened his eyes to the viola da gamba; he studied under Philippe Pierlot in Belgium, and then at the Paris Conservatory under Christophe Cowan. After gaining recognition as a young and talented gamba player, he founded La Chapelle Harmonique in his early twenties and has since emerged as a rising star conductor, now receiving acclaim for his performances of Bach’s major Passion works. The program features the early version of the “Magnificat”—one of Bach’s most popular works in France—and a cantata for Christmas… The soloists include not only established talents such as McLeod and Brazikova—both well-known as leading singers with the Bach Collegium Japan—but also Eva Zaisik, who has released solo albums on the Alpha label.
