Set in the present day, the story follows Melisande—a mysterious girl taken in by Golo—as she is brought to a room in a building resembling a psychiatric hospital to undergo treatment. Meanwhile, the abnormal and violent psychological states and behaviors fueled by the sexual imagery festering in the minds of Golo and his family (Pelléas, Arkel, Geneviève, among others)—which have become intensified by sexual imagery—gradually come to light, leading to a catastrophic conclusion. The meticulous and poetic conducting of Alain Artinogru, one of the rising stars of the next generation of conductors, guided the passionate vocal performances of a stellar cast of singers (Winters as Mélisande, Imbrailo as Péléas, Ketelsen as Goro, and others), lending Chernyakov’s production a reality that leaves the audience shaken.
