Description:
[The Art of the “Vivaldi Eve”: Four Bows and 16 Strings Unfolding a Rich Basso Continuo] The 17th century saw the great development of Baroque violin music in Italy. While Rome’s Corelli (1653–1713) is particularly famous as the pinnacle of this era, there were actually several other important centers of string music. Naples in the south, Modena and Bologna in the north… and Venice—which produced Vivaldi in the 18th century—was also a city that contributed significantly to the development of violin music throughout the 17th century. The members of Clematis, who have been unveiling the little-known world of early violin music on the long-established early music label Ricercar, carefully select and vividly convey—while keeping an eye on the great opera composers such as Monteverdi and Cavalli—just how rich a tradition of violin music was woven in that “City of Water,” carefully selecting and vividly presenting unique works in which multiple instruments interweave their sounds. After all, the title is “Four Violins.” While this may seem like a rather unusual ensemble at first glance, the 17th century actually saw a surprising number of works in which four violins—without the use of a viola—interwove their sounds on equal terms, starting with Gabrieli’s application of the secondary chorus form (two trio sonata ensembles) at the turn of the century. Amid pieces in unexpected instrumentations by the standard, extraordinary talents who formed the backbone of the early Baroque—such as Marini, Castello, and Uccellini—the album also includes works by vocal geniuses like Cavalli and Rossi, ensuring that listeners will undoubtedly be captivated by the consummate artistry of violin music inspired by song. This recording features a formidable ensemble of talented musicians—including keyboardists Yoan Moulin and Brice Saï, both of whom have released solo recordings on Ricercar—who bring great depth and reliability to the performance.
