[Featuring Two Contrasting Works from Modern France] The Berlin German Symphony Orchestra and Music Director Robin Ticciati are now in their third season. This fourth CD in the series features two major works of modern French music; it is the third release in the series to combine a Debussy orchestral work with a contemporary French vocal work performed by Kogener. In particular, the combination of *La Mer* and *Les Chants Oubliés* (CKD550) has received extremely high praise from all quarters. Duruflé served first as a chorister and later as an organist at major French churches, including Notre-Dame Cathedral. His “Requiem,” composed in 1947, is a stunningly beautiful work based on Gregorian chant and, alongside Fauré’s Requiem, enjoys widespread popularity in Japan. Here, it is performed in the full orchestral version, featuring Kojena as the mezzo-soprano soloist, while the baritone solo has been replaced by a bass unison from the choir. In contrast, in the *Nocturnes* written by Debussy—who was not particularly inclined to attend church throughout his life and left no religious works—in the late 1890s, Ticciati’s delicate conducting and the powerful ensemble sound unique to the Berlin Philharmonic bring a pleasant, undulating quality to the music.
