[A Music Festival Carrying On Rostropovich’s Legacy: Salonen Performs “Eroica” and “Metamorphosen”!] A live recording from the 2018 “Rencontres Musicales d’Évian,” a music festival held every summer in Évian, France. This music festival was founded by Antoine Riboud, the founder of Danone, who invited his friend Rostropovich to serve as music director; it eventually grew into one of Europe’s premier music festivals. The concert hall, designed by Patrick Bouchain, was completed in 1993. “La Grange aux Lacs,” designed by Patrick Bouchain and completed in 1993, immediately catches the eye with its wooden exterior reminiscent of a massive grain silo. The interior is also constructed entirely of wood, and combined with the birch wood trim behind the stage, it creates a warm atmosphere that feels like being in a forest—or reminiscent of an old Japanese theater. It also feels as if one were inside a cello, with aluminum panels covering the entire ceiling serving as the sole reflective surface to create a magnificent acoustic environment. In 2018, a new orchestra was formed in this hall, bringing together outstanding musicians from renowned orchestras across Europe, and its inaugural concert, conducted by Salonen, was held toward the end of the music festival. This album is a live recording of that event, featuring Beethoven’s “Eroica” as the main piece, along with Richard Strauss’s somber “Metamorphosen,” which employs the motif from the “Eroica” Funeral March. It is a delightful performance that combines the rich resonance of the wooden concert hall—with its warmth, as if taking a deep breath—with grand scale and youthful precision. Naxos Japan
