Description:
The Siggi String Quartet, which made its debut at the Young Scandinavian Composers Festival in Reykjavik in 2012, has actively collaborated with contemporary composers and premiered many commissioned works. They perform works from the Renaissance to the Classical and Romantic periods, but above all, they are passionate about the repertoire of the 20th and 21st centuries, and they are also committed to experimental playing, incorporating improvisation and electronics. The works by five composers on this album are a true showcase of their skills, including "Stillshot," which is modeled after the chaconne form; "Fair Flowers," which depicts Icelandic wild flowers with a melody that sinks into chaos while retaining fragmented melodies; "Sveinbjarnald," with its minimalist elements; and "The Rhythm of the Rhythm," with its melody of a flower in the middle of a field. Sveinbjarnardottir's "Opacity," with its minimalist elements, Zygurtsson's "Nebraska," the most melodic piece on the album, and the tension-filled "Selimonia" all have a strong musical statement.
