Description:

Born in St. Petersburg, Kabalevsky defied his mathematician father’s wishes and aspired to become a musician. In 1925, he entered the Moscow Conservatory, studied under Myaskovsky, and began his career as a composer. He displayed a mature compositional style from the very beginning of his career, and his “Piano Concerto No. 1,” published in 1928, achieved international success, marking a smooth start to his career. By continuing to compose works characterized by a clear and straightforward style, he avoided becoming a target of Zhdanov’s criticism and was hailed as “the Soviet Union’s leading composer” until his death. This album features two symphonies as its main selections. Symphony No. 1 was composed to commemorate the 15th anniversary of the Russian Revolution. Symphony No. 2, composed two years later, was also highly acclaimed and gained widespread popularity, including its U.S. premiere in 1942 under the baton of Toscanini. The album also includes two orchestral works: the overture to the opera *Kora Brunjon*, based on a play by Romain Rolland, and the overture to *Pathos*, written in 1960, allowing listeners to enjoy Kabalevsky’s music from various periods of his career. The conductor of this album, Darrell Ang, is a talented artist from Singapore who won first prize at the “50th Besançon International Conducting Competition” held in 2007, along with the Audience Prize and the Orchestra Prize. Having graduated at the top of his class from the conducting department at the St. Petersburg Conservatory, he delivers a majestic performance of these Kabalevsky works, filled with his unique empathy.
