Description:

[Baroque and Classical "Pygmalion" contrasted! Melodrama, dance opera, and the power of period orchestral music] From Belgium, a country of thrilling discoveries in the field of ancient music, comes a rich recording that reveals the essence of 18th century music spanning the Baroque and Classical periods! Two works set to music the ancient myth of Pygmalion, a sculptor who fell in love with the beauty of a female statue he had created, and who became a real woman when he spoke to her in earnest love. ...... The sense of coupling the dance drama of Rameau, a giant star in the history of French music, with the melodrama of G.A. Benda, a German master of the classical period, is as expected of the RAMEE label. The two masterpieces, each with a very different orchestral presence, are contrasted by the excellent performance of the two works on ancient instruments. Rameau's work has been very popular since its premiere in Paris in 1748, and the unique orchestration that supports the dances and accompanies the solo chorus is very appealing.Melodrama, on the other hand, is a unique orchestral genre in which the recitation is supported endlessly by the orchestra, and Benda's style of melodrama, with its ups and downs of the period from the Gale Age to the Classical Age, is superb (it is known that Mozart was also strongly inspired by Benda's melodrama). The conductor is the brilliant Bernolet, who has distinguished himself as an assistant to S. Kuiken, C. Rousset, and others at the forefront of classical music, and has recently been successful in Beethoven's 9th Symphony with Inmarsère's Anima Eterna Brüghe. The recording is available from Naxos Japan. Naxos Japan
