To commemorate the 200th anniversary of Gounod’s birth (2018), this little-known opera—revived at the Opéra-Comique in Paris—is now available on video! The story is set in 11th-century Bohemia. To reconcile the long-standing rivalries between the faction of Baron Moldav and that of Count Rodolphe, the hermit Pierre proposes a marriage between their children. The chosen couple is Agnes, Moldav’s daughter, and Theobald, Rodolphe’s son. However, the one Agnes truly loved was Theobald’s younger brother, Rodolphe. The two plot to elope during the commotion caused by the appearance of the ghost of the “Blood-Stained Nun”—which occurs once every five years—but Agnes arrives late for their rendezvous. Rodolphe mistakes the apparition for Agnès and swears his love to her, but… Gounod’s opera *The Blood-Stained Nun*—what a terrifying title. The libretto is based on the 19th-century bestseller *The Monk*, written by Matthew Gregory Lewis and inspired by a German medieval legend. This horror tale was a popular theme in the 19th century; Berlioz also set the same subject to music, though his work remained unfinished. Despite its resounding success at its 1854 premiere, this work—which had been forgotten over time—was magnificently revived at the Opéra-Comique to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Gounod’s birth (2018). In this production, veteran singers—led by Spiers—deliver magnificent performances against the backdrop of the Insula Orchestra, led by Ekilbey, and the energetic performance by the Acsanthus ensemble. Also noteworthy are the grace of rising star Debos and, above all, the intense vocal performance of Lebègue as “The Nun.” Please enjoy this impressive production, in which the dancers on stage blend seamlessly with the cast.
