However, this interpretation is by no means unusual given the conventions of the Baroque era. The viola da gamba was once cherished by the nobility as a symbol of a person capable of leading a harmonious social life. Not only was it well-suited to the intellectual contrapuntal music befitting the nobility, but its beautiful tone—which closely resembles the human voice—was also highly prized. It was sometimes used to perform vocal music in ensemble without a singer, simply by following the score; it was also used to treat organ solo pieces—which were often notated on separate staves for each voice part at the time—as ensemble works, unraveling the interweaving of the parts as they were played.
