News spreads throughout the fairy kingdom that the fairy Miranda has fallen in love with the human king, Altidore. As a condition for granting permission for the marriage, the Fairy King Demogorgon decreed that Miranda must “keep her true identity a secret for nine years and one day,” during which time she must prove Altidor’s true love. If she fulfills this condition, Miranda will become human and marry Altidore; but if she fails to win his love, she will be turned into a “snake” and forced to slither across the earth for 200 years. So, what will become of their love…? Alfredo Casella was a composer belonging to the generation following Puccini. Along with his contemporaries, such as Malipiero, he founded the “Society for New Italian Music” in the early 20th century and dedicated himself to promoting “pure music” rather than opera, which was then at its peak in Italy. That said, he did not entirely avoid opera or vocal music; he composed three operas during his lifetime. Among them, *La Donna Serpente*—his only full-scale opera—is based on an allegorical play by the 18th-century Commedia dell’Arte writer Carlo Gozzi (also known for being the source material for Wagner’s *The Fairy*) and is adorned with a brilliant orchestral score reminiscent of Respighi and Stravinsky. The role of the protagonist, Miranda, is sung by the accomplished soprano Carmel Remigio. Having captivated audiences and gained popularity through her frequent performances in Japan with her exceptional technique and emotionally rich singing, she once again delivers a passionate performance both in acting and singing. Platti, who sings the role of Altidore, also tackles this challenging part with her radiant voice. Combined with the dancers who add splendor to the stage, the beautiful costumes, and the set design, Noseda—who has been conducting at the Royal Opera House of Turin since 2007—masterfully brings this production together.
