John McCabe (1939-2015) was a British composer and pianist. In addition to being a specialist in Haydn performance, he is also praised for his active introduction of modern and contemporary British works. Although not widely known, McCabe was actually a great admirer of Grieg's works and remained an admirer throughout his life. In particular, "Sleeter," a collection of folk songs from various regions, was a favorite of McCabe's, and he claims to have drawn much inspiration from this stimulating work. The album was recorded in 1978, but the original tapes were so damaged that SOMM RECORDINGS engineers Martin Nicholas and Paul Arden Taylor meticulously restored them, bringing them back to life in a lucid sound that retains the warmth of the analog sound.
