The extraordinary sensibility that shone through on his Alpha debut—a collection of works by Folque—is fully on display in this latest solo recording, which brings together two unexpected composers. Scarlatti and Ligeti. Though they appear to be composers who lived in vastly different worlds—the Mediterranean of the 18th century and Central Europe of the 20th—they are surprisingly similar in their pursuit of “new sounds” and their ambition to create music that went far beyond existing musical theory. In particular, when we juxtapose three works by Ligeti—a 20th-century composer who emerged as the harpsichord was regaining its prominence—with the diversity of Scarlatti’s 18th-century works, which opened new horizons in harpsichord technique, the differences and affinities between the two provide unexpected mutual inspiration, resulting in a series of thrilling tracks. It is only thanks to performer Taylor’s extraordinary technique, thorough knowledge, and unconventional, flexible sensibility that such a feat could take shape.
