This is the story of a country ruled by a tyrant. A foreign man who came to bring joy to this land has been captured and sentenced to death. The tyrant’s wife, Heliane, takes pity on him, and though they are drawn to one another, Heliane refuses to cross the line. The tyrant schemes to open his wife’s heart to the foreigner and then win her back for himself, but when he realizes this is impossible, he has her arrested as well and summons a trial on charges of adultery… *The Miracle of Heliane* by Korngold, a leading composer of the late Viennese Romantic period, is a work dedicated to his wife, Luzi. It is a mystical love story unfolding amid the chromatic and rich soundscapes that draw from the traditions of Wagner and Richard Strauss. The enchanting sound created under the baton of Marc Albrecht, who specializes in Romantic works, strongly captivates the audience. Among the singers, Brian Judge delivered a passionate performance as the “Foreign Man,” and Joseph Wagner’s vocal acting, which conveyed the ruthlessness of the tyrant, was also noteworthy. Furthermore, Jakubiak, singing the title role of Heliane, made a strong impression with her resonant, beautiful voice and her compelling performance, in which she did not hesitate to bare her body. Christoph Loy’s direction skillfully utilizes modern sets and costumes, emphasizing the contrast between black and white, light and shadow, and successfully brings to life the “sacred”—a central theme of the story—much like a religious painting.
