Description:
In 1877, Brahms completed his Symphony No. 2. Building on the pastoral character of the Second Symphony—which stood in contrast to the dramatic and tense atmosphere of his First Symphony—he composed this “Violin Concerto” the following year. This work, which is indeed filled with elegant and beautiful melodies, is said to have been directly inspired by Sarasate’s performance of Bruch’s concerto; however, in reality, it was strongly influenced by Beethoven’s Violin Concerto, which shares the same key, and and because of its magnificent execution—where the rich orchestral part intertwines with the violin part’s beautiful and passionate melodies—it is hailed as one of the “Three Great Violin Concertos,” alongside those by Beethoven and Mendelssohn. The Double Concerto was composed in 1887. As Brahms’s final orchestral work, it is a magnificent masterpiece reminiscent of the Baroque “concerto grosso,” featuring a superb interplay between the dialogue of the solo instruments and the orchestra. The violin soloist is Tianwa Yang, a violinist well-known for her numerous albums released on NAXOS. Although this masterpiece has been the subject of many celebrated performances, she plays with bold confidence, unflinching in the face of challenge, and sings her own musical vision with resounding clarity. Schwaabe, who also serves as the cello soloist in the Double Concerto, sings out Brahms’s melancholic melodies with a resonant tone, delivering a splendid performance alongside Tianwa Yang. Leading the orchestral section—which is as significant as that of a symphony—is the renowned conductor Antoni Wit. He engages with Brahms’s music with a passion that rivals that of the young soloists. The recording, made at the “Church of Jesus Christ” in Berlin-Dahlem, is also worth noting. Naxos Japan
