Description:

[Pio Sings a Collection of Modern French Art Songs with an Orchestra Playing Period Instruments] If one were to say that “French music is all about orchestral color,” the first question that comes to mind is: What did the orchestral sound envisioned by the composers of that era actually sound like? It is truly a delight that Sandrine Pio is featured as the soloist on this album, which was produced by making the most of that very concept. “Although I’ve gained attention as a Baroque singer, I’ve actually had a particular fondness for modern French music since I was a child,” she says. Together with Le Concert de la Rouge—an ensemble that is rapidly gaining attention for performing music from Mozart onward using period instruments and performance practices—she presents works from the mid-19th century onward, —an era in which modern French music began to assert a truly unique presence through the orchestral timbre. After Saint-Saëns and others founded the Société de Musique Nationale in 1871, a steady stream of such works was produced in France to fill the gap of “too few art songs making full use of orchestral accompaniment”; This album is an excellent project that traces the authentic orchestral sound of 19th-century French music without compromise, dating back as far as Berlioz’s *A Summer Night*, for which the orchestral score was published in 1850. It also features numerous masterpieces by “forgotten but important composers” who have been gaining attention in recent years, such as Dubois, Borde, and Gilman. The liner notes are comprehensive, including an essay by musicologist Benoît Dratovitzki, who edited the scores. The Japanese edition includes the lyrics along with Japanese translations.
