Debussy and Brahms by the master cellist of the Cleveland Orchestra] This is the second Steinway label release by Brian Thornton, who has been the cellist of the Cleveland Orchestra for 25 years. In the first release (STNS30081), he gave us two Brahms cello sonatas, and this time he is joined by Afendi Yusuf, who joined the same Cleveland Orchestra as principal clarinetist for the 2017-2018 season, to perform Brahms' Triple Concerto. The combination of clarinet and cello, two of Brahms' favorite instruments, gives the work a wider range of expression than in previous works, and a greater depth of songfulness to convey the full appeal of the work. The coupling is Debussy's Cello Sonata. Thornton and pianist Meyer have a great interest in modern and contemporary works, and here they give Debussy a dynamic performance with a bold expression.
