[The Royal Ballet’s “Swan Lake”—the biggest talking point of 2018 with its first new production in 31 years!] It has been 31 years since Anthony Dowell’s production based on the choreography by Petipa and Ivanov. For this new production—designed for a Royal Ballet company whose cast has completely changed over the years—Artistic Director Kevin O’Hare selected the 31-year-old choreographic prodigy Liam Scarlett and set designer John McFarland. The stage design is dazzlingly opulent, and the number of costume designs—reportedly around 370—is truly astonishing. Centered on Rothbart—who also operates behind the scenes as a confidant of the queen—the production lends greater realism to the characters’ emotions while highlighting the dancers’ expressiveness. While remaining strictly within the framework of classical ballet, it succeeds in drawing the audience deeply into the story. Odette/Odile was portrayed by top prima ballerina Marianella Núñez, and Siegfried by principal dancer Vadim Muntagirov, allowing the audience to fully savor their dynamic and elegant performances. Another highlight is the introduction of two new characters—Prince Siegfried’s two sisters—played by Principal dancers Akane Takada and Francesca Hayward, who create memorable moments alongside Alexander Campbell as Benno, Siegfried’s friend.
