Bridge's Piano Quintet was composed in 1904. It is a powerful work, reminiscent of Franck's Quintet written almost 20 years earlier in its heavy atmosphere and use of cyclic forms. The "Novelette," written in the same year, is a collection of character pieces in three parts. The "Trio, Rhapsody" from 1928 is a modern work. The "Trio, Rhapsody" from 1928 is a modern piece, a surreal piece that reveals Bridge's forward-thinking spirit as Britten's teacher.
