Willems was born in the Netherlands and was active at about the same time as Beethoven. He is regarded as a composer who bridged the gap between the Classical and Romantic periods, writing symphonies reminiscent of Haydn and chamber works in the style of Schubert and Mendelssohn, a composer who left behind works that were truly "in tune with the times. The two piano quartets on this album are thought to have been composed between 1810 and 1812, and while the form is classical and the overall atmosphere is elegant, the creative use of the piano and the free string melodies are advanced, reminiscent of Schubert's works. The Valentin Piano Quartet uses strings made by Pilastro, a long-established violin string manufacturer founded in 1798, for this recording, which also offers a soft tone. Naxos Japan
