The Bercea Quartet, hailing from Romania, is one of the finest string quartets of our time and has drawn much attention for its performances in Japan. Their striking complete collection of Beethoven string quartets, released unexpectedly in 2013 on the Zig-Zag Territoires label, can now be considered the standard for a new era. Since then, on the Alpha label, they have produced outstanding recordings of the Second Viennese School (Alpha 209) and Shostakovich (a collaboration with Piotr Anderszewski; Alpha 360). Now, they turn their attention to 20th-century music from Central and Eastern Europe—offering a glimpse into new horizons with Janáček’s two string quartets and Ligeti. With their deep expertise in Romantic works, how will they allow us to savor these unique masterpieces through interpretations that breathe vivid life into them? In particular, “Metamorphoses of the Night” was composed in the 1950s, when Ligeti was still under the strong influence of Bartók, and composers from neighboring countries such as Prokofiev and Martinů were still alive. Comparing it with two masterpieces from Janáček’s late period will likely highlight the tension between unexpected connections to traditional compositional techniques and avant-garde innovation.
