To mark the 200th anniversary of Clara Schumann’s birth, this program features a carefully curated selection of songs by both Clara and her husband, Robert Schumann, centered on his song cycle *The Poet’s Love*. This recording showcases Julian Pregardien, son of the renowned singer Christoph Pregardien—who earned the trust of 20th-century early music revivalists such as Gustav Leonhardt and Nikolaus Harnoncourt—as he continues to make his mark on the scene. Julian Pregardien, who believes that “a period-authentic approach—thoroughly returning to the circumstances at the time of a work’s composition—is essential for any performance,” had originally planned to record *The Poet’s Love* several years ago but postponed the recording to further deepen his interpretation following the publication of the latest critical edition. Accompanied by Éric Le Sage—who has also undertaken a complete recording of Schumann’s piano works for the Alpha label—playing an original instrument from the year of Schumann’s death, the recording explores a “19th-century” interpretation of the work, mindful of the influence of Clara Schumann, who was herself a pianist. Furthermore, the duet tracks feature Sandrine Piau, whose work in art song has garnered increasing attention in recent years! The liner notes include comments from the performers themselves (the Japanese edition includes translations of the lyrics).
