Julian Pregardien is a young tenor who commands a strong presence on the scene. His father, Christoph Pregardien, is also an outstanding lieder singer, and Julian himself is making a name for himself in the fields of sacred music and lieder. For his first recording on the ALPHA label, he chose the song cycle *Winterreise*. However, this is not the cycle written by Schubert, but rather an expansive, orchestral song cycle created by the later composer Hans Zender, who shaped it “as if it were an opera or a musical narrative.” This work was also performed by his father, Christoph, who helped make its uniqueness widely known. As Zender himself described it as a “creative transformation,” this collection has been imbued with an “expressive character” that stands in stark contrast to the beauty and depth of Schubert’s original works, which were pared down to their very essence. From the very first piece, “Goodnight,” the singer must walk endlessly through the snow that has accumulated before even beginning to sing. The singing at times turns to cries and lamentations, while the orchestra vividly depicts the landscape, forcing the listener to grapple with the terror and resignation looming before them. Pregardien’s crystalline singing seems to purify this world filled with anguish. This new Japanese edition includes a Japanese translation of Zender’s own introductory notes. Naxos Japan
