Rathaus was born in Tarnopol, in the eastern part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. He studied music as a pupil of Franz Schreker and became a teacher of composition and music theory at the Higher School of Music in Berlin. His early series of symphonies and chamber music were highly acclaimed, and he also began his career as a film music composer, but like other composers of Jewish descent, he was labeled a "degenerate music composer" by the Nazi regime and fled Austria, passing through Paris and London before finally settling in New York. However, he gained popularity here as a teacher in the composition department, and he lived a happy life as a composer thereafter. This album contains mainly piano pieces written in his early years. The album features mainly piano music written in his early years, and includes ambitious works from his flourishing period based in Austria, as well as film music that made him famous, performed by the Polish pianist Nukowski.
