Since its founding in 1987, Anima Eterna Brugge—led by early music keyboardist Jos van Immerseel—has expanded its period-instrument repertoire from the Classical to the Romantic periods and on into the 20th century… and in recent years, the ensemble has broken new ground! As if returning to the small ensemble format of its early days, the group has increasingly turned its attention to chamber music. While their previous album featured Mendelssohn’s Octet, this release takes a further step by presenting Schubert’s Octet—which Schubert himself described as “the first step toward a symphony for a large orchestra”—alongside the Grand Septet by the Swedish master Berwald. Balancing the former’s grand scale with the latter’s indescribable chamber music subtleties, this program offers the perfect opportunity to reexamine the 19th century—the age of the orchestra. Every instrument used is an original! While there are quite a few competing recordings of Berwald’s Grand Septet, the opportunity to hear it performed on period instruments is a rare treat.
