The string quartet version of Mozart’s “Requiem” has been performed by several ensembles, including the Kuiken Quartet, ever since the Aglaia Quartet released their album about 20 years ago. The arranger, Lichtenthal, was an Austrian medical doctor and amateur musician. A close friend of Mozart’s son Karl, he succeeded in transposing Mozart’s final masterpiece into a string quartet arrangement that is both faithful and unadorned. The period instrument ensemble “Pandolfis Consort” delivers an intimate performance of this arrangement—which strips away all words from the original “religious piece in which the lyrics hold great significance”—resulting in a magnificent rendition that evokes feelings of tears, sorrow, and hope.
