Damien Guillon, a world-renowned French countertenor who has garnered significant attention among Japanese early music fans through his repeated guest appearances as a soloist with the Bach Collegium Japan. In Le Banc Céleste, which he conducts himself, Mode Gratton is also gaining increasing recognition as a soloist. (who has also released a collection of Bach’s organ works on Herreweghe’s Phi label. LPH021) and has delivered numerous outstanding performances with an extremely small ensemble—one performer per part, excluding the basso continuo. This recording features BWV 82, one of Bach’s finest masterpieces in which the alto-countertenor solo stands out, and BWV 169 (the opening Sinfonia is known for its connection to the second harpsichord concerto) as the central pieces, while also including four solo works in which the organ’s presence leaves a strong impression. Accompanied by an organ built specifically for Bach’s works—an 18th-century Thuringian-style instrument crafted by the Dominique Thomas workshop in Strasbourg, which specializes in historic organs—this recording offers an early music interpretation that brings us close to the true essence of Bach, the church musician who lived and breathed as an organist.
