Description:

The story takes place in a fictional kingdom. King Uhu comes to town in search of a criminal to be executed by “impalement,” the main event of the festival scheduled for the following day. There, he encounters a young man named Lazuri. Lazuri falls in love at first sight with Laura, a member of a diplomatic delegation from a neighboring country, but is shocked to learn she is married—and in his distress, he inadvertently insults King Ufu, who happens to be standing nearby. Seizing this opportunity, King Ufu frames Lazuri as the criminal, but just then, the fortune-teller Shiroko appears. Shiroko prophesied that “the fates of the king and Lazuli are bound together; if one loses his life, the other will meet the same fate,” so King Uhu is unable to carry out the execution. However, due to a scheme by the envoy Ellison, Lazuli is shot... In the late 1800s, when Offenbach was producing a series of witty operettas, other composers inspired by him also released a succession of entertaining works. Chabrier’s *L’Étoile* is one such work. The one-act comic opera *Fisch-Ton-Kan*, composed around 1864, was based on a libretto by Chabrier’s friend, Verlaine. However, after hearing it, Luterier and Van Lo (also friends) felt that “the lyrics might be too bold,” so they wrote a new libretto, and Chabrier composed this comic opera, *L’Étoile*. From the aria “Little Star,” sung by Lazuri in the play, to the entire work, it is filled with delicate and beautiful music. The passionate performances by singers currently in the spotlight—including Dustrac and Guemmet—are supported by Fournier’s steady baton, and Laurent Perry’s innovative staging is also worth noting.
