Pianist and composer Reinbert de Leeuw, known for his unconventional interpretations of Satie, was born in the Netherlands, a leading center for early music... In recent years, he has frequently performed with the long-established choir Collegium Vocale Gent, founded by early music conductor Philippe Herreweghe, and has already earned high praise on the Alpha label for an album in which he conducted a collection of Janáček’s choral works (Alpha 219). De Leeuw’s affinity for modern works—backed by his aptitude for them and a deep love of the repertoire—is reminiscent of the achievements of Hans Zender and Gidon Kremer in Romantic music; however, the focus of this release is an unconventional work from Liszt’s late period. The choral work *The Way of the Cross*, which traces the 14 stations leading up to Jesus’ crucifixion, offers a unique listening experience as the dense and esoteric harmonic language the composer developed in his later years blends with the text. This new recording, featuring De Leeuw’s own piano playing and the pure sound of a period-instrument choir, is sure to allow listeners to experience the beauty of this work in an indescribable way.
