Description:
A very interesting project by Italian cellist Mauro Valli, whose repertoire ranges from ancient to modern works. The album features Domenico Gabrielli's Ricercaré, one of the earliest examples of music for unaccompanied cello in history, and Bach's Suite for Unaccompanied Cello, both of which are notable for their tonal relationships. Bologna, where Gabrielli was based, was one of the first capitals where music using the cello as a solo instrument flourished from the 17th century. Valli's deep understanding of the cello music of the Italian Baroque period and his own fascination with Italian composers such as Frescobaldi, Albinoni, and Vivaldi led him to create a unique Italian interpretation of Bach's music. It is interesting to note that he uses a 5-string cello piccolo in the 4th as well as in the 6th Suite. Naxos Japan
