This album features an extremely intimate interpretation of Beethoven—led by Johnson and her colleagues, alongside the Calducci String Quartet—along with several other delightful works. Beethoven’s Septet became an instant hit upon its release, but because it featured an unprecedented combination of instruments and was difficult to cast, it was later arranged into various forms, including a piano trio version. With its moderate level of difficulty and bright musical ideas, it was designed for aristocrats and amateur musicians to enjoy among friends. “Introduction, Theme, and Variations,” previously thought to be a work by Weber, is now definitively attributed to Kühner, yet its beauty remains unchanged.
