Looking ahead to 2032, the 300th anniversary of Haydn’s birth, the theme of Volume 7 in the complete symphony series—which the extraordinary early music performer Giovanni Antonini is steadily advancing—is “The Court Theater and Its Director.” This project involves alternating between the Basel Chamber Orchestra—a group of talented musicians who skillfully switch between period and modern instruments—and *Il Giardino Armonico*, which he founded himself; for this volume, the partner ensemble is the former. Both the early works, brimming with fresh ingenuity, and the two mid-period works—which represent the pinnacle of his artistic maturity—are said to be based on opera and cantata music linked to the artistic direction of the theater directors who oversaw performances at the court theater of the Esterházy family… A hidden highlight is the inclusion of the music Mozart composed for *Tamos, King of Egypt*—a production in which one of those same theater directors was reportedly involved (this is a superb recording, a far cry from Anner Bylsma’s solo recording of yesteryear). Aside from the stylish and spontaneous sound, the comprehensive liner notes (which include a Japanese translation for the domestic edition) that help unravel the themes are not to be missed.
