Long before Vivaldi’s *The Four Seasons* experienced a dramatic resurgence in the 20th century, it was already hugely popular in 18th-century Paris. “Spring,” in particular, was even being performed in public as early as 1764, the year Mozart first visited Paris. One person who did not overlook this popularity was the musician Shedville, who was also active in the music publishing industry… Having previously pieced together a collection of sonatas titled *The Faithful Shepherd* (boldly published as Vivaldi’s Op. 13) from various existing works by Vivaldi, he published a collection titled *The Joyful Seasons*, consisting of six pieces in total—including two compositions he arranged using the same technique, based on *The Four Seasons*. This collection, which was a success as sheet music allowing amateur musicians in Paris—who were particularly fond of the viellalu (a hardy-gurdy, a stringed instrument played by turning a handle to rotate a wheel that rubs against the strings)—to perform famous pieces, is now presented in a chamber music arrangement by Toby Miller, a new-generation viellalu player who showcased his remarkable technique in the collection of works by French Baroque composers ( *The Beautiful Vielle Player* RIC382), where he demonstrated remarkable virtuosity, now presents these pieces in a chamber music arrangement, offering a fresh and elegant interpretation that is refined in every detail. Although this collection is well-known among early music aficionados, opportunities to learn its details are rare; this release is all the more welcome for its comprehensive liner notes (which include a full translation in the Japanese edition).
