"Orfeo ed Euridice" by Flores and Kalk, recorded at La Scala, is now available. Gluck’s *Orfeo ed Euridice*, which premiered in Vienna in 1762, was a groundbreaking work in the history of opera that placed great emphasis on the relationship between libretto and music; approximately 12 years later, a French-language version was also staged in Paris. On this occasion, not only was the language changed from Italian, but various revisions were made, including transposing the arias of the protagonist Orphe (the French form of “Orfeo”) from countertenor to tenor, adding new arias for Orphe, incorporating ballet music, expanding the famous “Dance of the Spirits,” and altering the instrumentation. This video features the production originally staged at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, in 2015, which was revived at La Scala in Milan in 2018. Although the role of Orpheus has been changed to tenor, giving it greater power, Flores’s lustrous voice ensures that even those accustomed to hearing it sung by a countertenor will not feel any significant dissonance. Flores’s uniquely emotive performance, combined with the excellent performances by Kalk and Saïd, greatly enhances the story. Although the set appears simple at first glance, it incorporates ingenious touches such as a mechanism that raises the orchestra onto the stage. Furthermore, the ballet blends modern dance with Gluck’s music, and combined with the modern-inspired costumes, the production creates a stage where various styles come together in a captivating harmony.
