Finnish prodigy Louvali, who caused a sensation with his performance alongside the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra during his first visit to Japan in 2011, was appointed principal conductor of the Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra in his twenties, succeeding Hannu Lintu, a renowned specialist in Nordic music. While his 2017 tour of Japan with the orchestra drew considerable attention, beginning that fall, he also took on the role of principal conductor at the prestigious Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra in Sweden—an institution known for its long, close association with the maestro Neeme , he also became the principal conductor of the prestigious Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra—known for its long and fruitful collaboration with the maestro—marking the first time the position had been held by a principal conductor since Dudamel (2007–12). To mark this momentous first step for Louvali and the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, this album—their grand recording debut on the Alpha label—features a program that includes Sibelius’s Symphony No. 1, which garnered rave reviews during their first visit to Japan, and the exquisite pairing with “En Saga,” another masterpiece from his early years.
