Verdi's "The Lombards of the First Crusade" is a profound story set in 11th century Milan about the liberation of a people from oppressive rule and the feud between brothers of a Roman noble family. However, the political criticism and religious themes in the work were considered problematic, and the Cardinal of Milan appealed to the Austrian magistrate, causing a number of problems before the production. Unfortunately, the work is rarely performed today, but conductor Mariotti expressed the power and passion of the work, and the singers, including veteran singer Esposito, gave enthusiastic performances.
