Description:
This album contains three oratorios composed by Telemann for the Hamburg church for the Christmas season in 1730/31 and a cantata published in Nuremberg in 1744. The church in Hamburg had eight vocalists and about 20 instrumentalists, and Telemann was able to make full use of their abilities to write lavish-sounding, tailor-made works. The oratorio benefits fully from this, and is a work of great imagination and artistic skill. The singers take on a variety of roles, not only human and divine, but also anthropomorphic "truth" and "love," and create magnificent music with vivid language. The performance is a wonderful one, featuring the virtuoso Virens in Telemann and some of Germany's finest baroque singers. Naxos Japan
