The latest release from Kopachinskaya, released in 2018. The theme is “2”—not only because it is a duo album, but also because it juxtaposes the music of Ravel and Poulenc, two of the foremost French composers of the modern era, with that of Dohnányi and Bartók, two of Hungary’s most distinguished composers… In other words, it seems to convey the nuance of where the worlds of Eastern and Western Europe intersect. Furthermore, the album strongly conveys a message about the intersection of two worlds—the classical and the folk—as seen in the Spanish poet García Lorca’s love of flamenco, to which Poulenc’s works pay homage, and the longing for Romani music expressed in Ravel’s “Tzigane.” In fact, Kopachinskaya grew up in her native Moldova with parents who were among the country’s foremost folk musicians, and she developed a deep appreciation for the world of folk music. On the other hand, Reshchenko, a native of Leningrad (now St. Petersburg), is a prodigy who, after studying under masters such as Gilorif and Margulis, gained worldwide attention following high praise from Argerich and has continued to make remarkable strides in her career. His boundless pianism stands out with a presence worthy of rivaling Kopachinskaya’s rustic sensibility. The program—in which the presence of Bartók’s works, straddling the line between power and refinement, creates an exquisite contrast with masterful performances of Poulenc and Ravel that reinvent the image of elegant modern French music—is an album that reminds us once again that the history of musical performance is constantly being rewritten.
