Featuring Schubert’s string quartet “Death and the Maiden”—a masterpiece that has been performed countless times by numerous ensembles—this program offers a completely fresh perspective that continually surprises the listener with the hidden beauty of this famous piece; its richness truly lives up to the worldwide acclaim it has received. The album also features string arrangements of Renaissance masterpieces such as Byzantine chant (Kopachinskaya reportedly grew up listening to Orthodox church services in her native Moldova) as well as Dowland’s “Tears” and Gesualdo’s madrigals with their distinctive dissonant harmonies, along with short pieces by the contemporary composer Kurtág. “Death and the Maiden,” performed by a string ensemble with various musical interludes between works and movements, is brought to life through the exquisite and thrilling performance of the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra—with Kopatinskaya as principal player and soloist, combined with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra’s exquisite and thrilling performance, makes the music feel as though it were composed right there and then. The booklet notes (the Japanese edition includes a Japanese translation) open with the poem by Matthias Claudius that Schubert used for the lyrics of the song version. Taking the motif of Death and the Maiden—which dates back to the Middle Ages—as a starting point, Kopachinskaya herself contributed an essay explaining the program. The booklet also includes interviews with members of the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, offering a multifaceted exploration of the music.
