The string quartet, one of the ultimate forms of Western classical music, combines in a new way with the bandoneon, a crystallization of Argentine music. The stylish result is centered around "Five Tango Sensations," the only suite for string quartet and bandoneon compiled by Piazzolla at the request of the Kronos Quartet, and "Homage to Piaf," a paraphrase of the masterpieces that colored the interwar period. The Terpsichord Quartet is a Geneva group that has attracted attention for its recordings of Haydn and Schubert on period instruments. The French bandoneon player Sabatier has worked on stage music with Barricco, the author of "The Pianist on the Sea," and Agota Kristof of "Diary of a Bad Boy," while also performing tango cross-border with L.G. Alarcon, an ancient instrumental conductor from Argentina who has also recorded with Alpha. He is a gifted musician. The multi-faceted nature of this recording allows for a quality layering of sound that is captured in its true glory by Philippe Tessier du Clos, the talented engineer in charge of mixing and mastering.
