Although Alexei Lyubimov is a successor to the orthodox Russian piano tradition, having studied under Heinrich Neuhaus and Lev Naumov, he developed an interest in period instruments early on while still in the former Soviet Union, After establishing himself as a harpsichordist, he actively toured Western countries following the end of the Cold War, seeking out the ideal fortepiano—the very instrument known to the composers whose works he loves to perform—as a master of his craft. In the world of the fortepiano, he is also famous for having nurtured many outstanding students—much like a mentor—from his bases in Russia, the Netherlands, and France. Now, from among his students, Olga Pasichenko—who has burst onto the scene and is currently one of the most rapidly rising and highly acclaimed fortepiano players in Europe—joins him for this ideal collaborative album! J-L. Ducek (not to be confused with F-X. Dušek, who was active in Vienna during Mozart’s time) was a composer who enjoyed the patronage of Marie Antoinette in Paris. During the Revolution, he traveled to Berlin and London, where—with his exceptional skill and extraordinary compositional talent—he wrote many masterful sonatas that fully showcased the capabilities of the new instrument, the fortepiano (at a time when the harpsichord was still widely used). He could be described as the “missing link” between Mozart and Schubert, but the true value of his works—which captivated audiences of his day—can only be fully appreciated by returning to the sound of the instruments of that era —Based on models of historical instruments left behind by the renowned Viennese master craftsman Walter, or from the long-established Longman piano workshop—which Clementi, himself a composer and pianist, acquired and expanded— the exquisite tonal nuances produced by these meticulously crafted replicas—created by Paul McNulty and Chris Marne, two of today’s leading historical piano restorers—are brought to their fullest potential by two soloists who know exactly how to handle this type of instrument (Engineered by the renowned engineer Fuchs-Gal, who has also been active in PanClassics’ chamber music recordings). At the time, it was said that using the piano in concertos was difficult due to its low volume; however, one of the attractions of this recording is the opportunity to compare it with works such as piano quintets—which could effectively be called concertos—and chamber music featuring the piano.
