The 18th-century Spanish composer Antonio Soler (also known as “Padre Soler”) lived as a clergyman for over 30 years at the Royal Monastery of El Escorial near Madrid. While there, he transcribed numerous works by Scarlatti—a senior figure in the Spanish royal court—and he also composed his own music, leaving his mark on history with a vast body of work, including numerous sonatas for keyboard instruments. However, it is less well known that, in addition to his active role as an organist, he also served as the chapel master and composed many religious choral works. The two sets of works for choir and instrumental ensemble, written in Latin and included here, are all world premiere recordings. They reveal an unexpected side of Soler—who has been known primarily as a Rococo-era keyboard composer—showcasing his familiarity with church music rooted in ancient traditions. La Grande Chapelle, led by musicologist Recasens—a leading figure in Spain’s early music scene—has once again assembled a group of Europe’s foremost early music performers (including Marc Antay on flute and Mira Grodeanu as principal string player, among many other renowned virtuosos who are also celebrated as soloists), offering a performance of profound depth, imbued with deep reverence for this great figure from their homeland. Furthermore, the “Largo” for organ—the only instrumental work on this album—is performed on a rare, historic 18th-century Spanish organ located in the church where the recording took place.
