November 1918—exactly 100 years before the release of this album—was the month when World War I, which had claimed countless lives during more than four years of stalemate, finally reached an armistice. Belgium, whose territory had been devastated in the midst of the German-French campaign, was particularly enthusiastic about the “1914–1918” project—a initiative launched in 2014 across Europe to reexamine the art of the pre- and post-World War I era. The French-speaking Belgian label Musique en Wallonie, which has worked tirelessly to rehabilitate the reputations of composers—including Ysaÿe and Jongen—who achieved success after being forced to evacuate during the war, as well as those whose careers were cut short by the conflict, is now, as a fitting culmination of the project’s final year, “Belgium During the Great War”—an album that highlights the achievements of musicians who, while witnessing their country—which should have become Europe’s preeminent cultural powerhouse by the early 20th century—fall into ruin, continued to bring solace to people’s hearts with remarkable resilience. Reviving for the present day a musical world unique to metropolitan areas—one that stands somewhat apart from the mainstream classical tradition of conservatories and that nurtured figures such as Satie and Schoenberg—is the Salon Orchestra, led by Eric Matheu, an early music double bassist who has earned the unwavering trust of leading Belgian conductors from the Netherlands—a leading center of early music—and Belgium—have placed their utmost trust in. Gathered around a Pleyel piano built in 1843, these masterful chamber musicians—interwoven with the sweet vocals of a soprano and tenor—vividly revive the European sounds of the “pre-jazz era,” such as waltzes and ragtime, with the authentic empathy only musicians from the region can provide.
