A tragic story based on a real-life incident that took place around 1820 in a small German town. Wozzeck, a timid soldier living there, discovers that his common-law wife, Marie, is having an affair with the drum major; after a heated argument, he stabs her and then drowns after falling into a swamp. After seeing the play by the German playwright Büchner, Berg decided to adapt the story into an opera. The completed work was entirely different from the late Romantic operas that had come before it, presenting a novel and innovative production in which a rigorously structured libretto intertwined with music for each scene that incorporated atonality; today, it is regarded as one of the greatest masterpieces among “operas composed in the 20th century.” In this production, the sets and costumes are kept as simple as possible to bring the characters’ personalities and the macabre nature of the story to the forefront, with the unfolding of the plot entrusted entirely to the singers’ voices and the intricate, intense music performed by the orchestra. The title role of Wozzeck is sung by British baritone Christopher Maltman. Active on stages around the world—including the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, the Bavarian State Opera, and the Berlin State Opera—he is also known for his masterful renditions of German lieder, and in this production of *Wozzeck*, he vividly portrays a sensitive man’s descent into madness through his singing. The role of Marie is played by the Dutch soprano Westbroek, known for her powerful voice, who masterfully portrays the woman’s fluctuating psyche. Other roles, such as the Doctor and the Drum Major, are performed by singers each with their own distinctive personalities, and Mark Albrecht dramatically brings the entire production together.
