La Morra

Description:

The Basel Schola Cantorum, a global hub for early music education where Savall and Banchini once trained countless students, is a major center that leads the world not only in Baroque and Renaissance music but also in the research and historical performance of medieval music. There, it continues to deliver high-quality performances, and in recent years, through collaborations with Corina Marti—a master of the harpsichord and historical harp who studied alongside her in Basel during the same period— , who studied together in Basel during the same period and has been gaining a growing fan base in Japan through their collaborations. Corina Marti, along with La Morla—the ensemble she co-leads with her partner Michal Gontko—is releasing a new recording that can only be described as a testament to their position at the forefront of medieval music research! The theme is “14th-Century Florence.” In the Italian musical landscape of this era—where the foundations for Renaissance music were steadily being laid, even as the Ars Nova of northern France was gaining attention—Florence, with its thriving civic culture, was a place of great significance. However, However, due to periodic wars and the passage of time, musical sources from before the 15th century are few and far between, leaving experts with no choice but to repeatedly return to the same manuscripts… but this time, a steady stream of compositions discovered as recently as 2018 is featured. Thanks to improvements in camera technology, it has become possible to decipher even the “musical scores that were once written” on parchment manuscripts—which, during the Middle Ages, had had all their original text scraped off and were reused for other purposes—resulting in a steady stream of previously unknown scores emerging from unexpected manuscripts… This album features live performances and recordings of those very pieces. The virtuosity displayed on the claviciterium—a medieval keyboard instrument predating the harpsichord—has already been demonstrated on previous releases from the RAMEE label (RAM1108, 0802, and others), and the polyphonic works—woven with crystalline voices by world-class early music singers, including countertenor Dron Schlaifer—are equally captivating. The Japanese edition features comprehensive translations of the liner notes and lyrics, making this a release that thoroughly satisfies the curiosity of listeners with a deep interest in medieval music, a field for which source material is scarce.
