Tchaikovsky (1840-1893)

Description:

Paris Opera An ambitious work combining the opera "Iolanta" and the ballet "The Nutcracker"! Blind Princess Iolanta is brought up under the protection of her father, King René, without knowing that she is blind. The story involves a Moorish doctor who can cure the princess's sight, Vaudemont, a suitor who falls in love with Iolanta at first sight, and Robert, her friend and Iolanta's fiance... Tchaikovsky's last opera, the one-act opera "Iolanta," is set on the birthday of Marie, the setting for "The Nutcracker". The Nutcracker is an original production in which the play is performed in Marie's living room on her birthday, and the end of the play leads to the beginning of the ballet, "The Nutcracker. The Nutcracker will be choreographed by three outstanding contemporary dance choreographers (Arthur Pita, Edouard Lock, and Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui), who will not follow the traditional Petipa choreography, but rather boldly reinterpret each scene.Cherniakov's staging is held together by a common plot, as Vodemon, who courts Iolanta in the opera, also has a heart for the main character Marie in the world of "The Nutcracker," as it is. The title role in the opera is played by Sonya Yoncheva, a much-talked-about soprano from Bulgaria, and the ballet is performed by the Paris Opera's etoile Stéphane Brillon and Alice Renavin, among others, in a superb dance performance.
