Description:
In Rome from the late 17th century through the early 18th century, there were numerous artistic societies known as “academies,” organized by nobles and cardinals, which included many influential literary figures, philosophers, and even musicians such as Corelli and Alessandro Scarlatti. The focus of this album is Luliel, who served Cardinal Pietro Ottaviani (a relative of Pope Alexander VIII)—known for his generous financial support of Corelli and Vivaldi—and played a particularly important role in the history of cello music. While he composed numerous works, he is also known to have made his mark on history as a performer of string instruments—particularly low-pitched string instruments—and as a trombonist; however, as of 2018, the majority of his surviving works are vocal pieces such as cantatas and oratorios. However, together with his contemporary, the prodigious Alessandro Scarlatti, he contributed to the development of the “chamber cantata”—a genre for small ensembles featuring recitative and arias of remarkable brilliance—and helped establish it as a distinct style. As befits the works of Lullière, a master cellist, the cello plays a prominent role in many of the pieces performed here, and its performance is particularly striking even in the sonatas paired with the cantatas. The beautiful vocals are performed by Francesca Boncompagni, born in 1984. She studied voice with Sara Mingard and is active as a Baroque soprano. The “Accademia Ottavoni”—named after a cardinal with close ties to Lulier and led by Marco Cecchatto, one of the busiest Baroque cellists in the early music scene both in Italy and abroad—delivers a magnificent performance of the complete works.
